Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023)

“Still reeling from the loss of Gamora, Peter Quill rallies his team to defend the universe and one of their own – a mission that could mean the end of the Guardians if not successful.”

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 (2023)

Now, I’m no expert on Marvel. During almost every new movie, I have to lean over to my husband for numerous plot refreshers.

Side note. He has the Star Wars and Marvel universes covered, I have Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. It’s all about equality in the Williams household. End side note.

However, within my limited perspective, there appears to be a sharp downturn in the quality of Marvel’s last few outings. I don’t know if it’s because Marvel started producing so much more content due to its Disney+ original series, but there have been more stinkers than usual over the past couple of years. I personally H.A.T.E.D. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and thought it was the worst of the entire Marvel catalog. And then came along Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3

Sigh.

What a fall from grace. The first Guardians movie was so strong with its wit, its rebellious spirit, its showcase of Chris Pratt’s talents as a leading man, and, of course, its unforgettable soundtrack. Sadly, Disney’s absurd dedication to formula and its inability to kill beloved characters has led to the downfall of the franchise and everything that Guardians once had going for it now acts as its Achilles heel.

Aside from an incredibly tragic telling of Rocket the Raccoon’s backstory that will tear your heart apart (which is exactly what you want from Marvel, right?!), the movie is exhausting and far too long. And those beloved elements? The comedy now feels forced. The rebellious spirit now feels expected and trite. Chris Pratt is now the world’s least favorite Chris. And even the soundtrack has lost its fire.

Personally, between Doctor Strange and Guardians, Marvel has had two strikes far too close together for me. One more stinker that wastes nearly three hours of my time, and I might be out.
