“A historical epic inspired by true events that took place in The Kingdom of Dahomey, one of the most powerful states of Africa in the 18th and 19th centuries.” – IMDB

While I’m not usually one for action movies, The Woman King delivers on so many different levels… and is also a badass action movie.
The Woman King introduces us to The Kingdom of Dahomey and its elite force of female warriors, led by Viola Davis. First off, I love a good historical epic. I love being able to dive into a new part of history that I wouldn’t have known about if it hadn’t been for the film. That is definitely the case here.
And as I said before, The Woman King also stands apart from many action movies in that the action serves a purpose to both the plot and the character development, which makes the action sequences not drag on as they can tend to do.
This movie also delivers incredible performances (Viola Davis is amazing, as always), an entertaining plot that keeps you interested throughout, and an inspiring message about female empowerment.
My only qualms would be a difficult to believe plot twist and a throwaway love story that seemed relatively unnecessary. But aside from that, I found it to be a unique and exciting movie that I’m likely to watch again.
