“The saga of the Eternals, a race of immortal beings who lived on Earth and shaped its history and civilizations.” – IMDB

During the earliest days of quarantine in March of 2020, I decided to finally throw my hands up in the air and watch all of the Marvel movies in order of their release. What else did I have going on? And, as everyone said, I did end up enjoying them and now have an interest in seeing where the overarching storyline goes from here.
However, there are still times when Marvel becomes a parody of itself and gives in to what everyone mocks it for. To me, Eternals, encapsulates the worst aspects of the Marvel industrial complex. Let me clarify…
The story, from what I can tell…., focuses on a group of ten immortals (“Eternals”) who help build up societies around the universe, at the behest of godlike “Cellestials,” while also fighting demonlike “Deviants.” However, as you would expect, things get a little tricky and the Cellestials’ plans for these societies may not be as straightforward as the Eternals were led to believe.
Let me pause here to remind you that this is a personal blog so, yes, it is quite biased. Okay, back to our regularly scheduled programming…
I can’t stand movies that are filled with a-listers. There is a reason they want us to be starstruck so that we WON’T FOCUS ON THE PLOT. Hi, this is Eternals! While there are moments of chemistry, banter, and the promise of an interesting storyline, there is just too much going on in this movie to make you interested in what happens to these characters. Most of the twists in the film can be seen from a mile away and I honestly just found myself annoyed at the naivete of many of these IMMORTAL characters by the end of the film.
So, can you tell I wasn’t a fan? It is by no means the worst movie I’ve ever seen, but I do believe that if this was the first Marvel movie someone saw, they would refuse to see anymore. Luckily…I decided to watch Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings shortly after watching Eternals and it was everything that Eternals was not…
