“Following a writer on his world famous fictional play about a grieving father who travels with his tech-obsessed family to small rural Asteroid City to compete in a junior stargazing event, only to have his world view disrupted forever.” -IMDB

To quote T-Swift: “It’s me, hi. I’m the problem, it’s me.”
This is how I feel when I watch Wes Anderson movies. I so badly want to “get” them. They’re beautiful! There have amazing ensembles! Movie nerds love them! Yet, I sit solemnly, dejected, and, worst of all…BORED.
And Asteroid City is no exception.
Anderson’s latest film has its moments, as many of his movies do, where I almost catch a glimpse of what everyone else seems to love. Little pieces where the convoluted writing becomes clear and perfectly syncs with the masterful cinematography and for a second I think I finally “get it!” But then it slips away, back into the hour forty five self-indulgent circle jerk (apologies) that feels like a carbon copy of every single other movie he’s made.
But hey, if you’ve liked his movies in the past, then give this one a go! I’m sure it comes down to his movies just not being for me. But I’ve also heard from Wes Anderson fans that even they thought this movie was a bit of a bore. So put on your bow tie, grab that antique monocle from your grandma’s attic, and proceed with caution.
