“A plumber named Mario travels through an underground labyrinth with his brother, Luigi, trying to save a captured princess.” – IMDB

Although I didn’t go into The Super Mario Bros. Movie with incredibly high hopes, it is still somewhat of a shock to watch a movie that involves so many funny people and have it be so…unfunny!
While the visuals were impressive, nods were given to the original games, and there were a few chuckles along the way, the movie was forgettable overall.
Let’s get this out of the way… Chris Pratt was the wrong casting for Mario. It is what it is. But the dullness of the writing also caused what could have been great casting to fall flat. Anya Taylor-Joy’s peach was stunted and one note. And Charlie Day, Jack Black, Seth Rogan, and Keegan-Michael Key, among others, were not given room to be as funny as they could have been.
Unfortunately, there are so many other animated films that keep both their young and adult audiences in mind that the Super Mario Bros. Movie being this boring is almost unforgivable in my eyes. But I won’t stay mad about it. Instead, I’ll just wait for the next remake to come along. So, let’s see, the Bob Hoskins/John Leguizamo Super Mario Bros. movie came out in 1993. This one came out in 2023. I guess I’ll see you all in 2053!
