“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” (2023)

Whether he meant to or not, my husband evangelized me to the Spider-Verse through his repeated viewings of 2018’s “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.” He loved the animation, soundtrack, storyline and initially insisted I watch the film (a rarity, it’s usually the opposite). After that first time, I subsequently chose to watch as I appreciated those same elements. Into the Spider-Verse was a breath of fresh air in the sometimes stifling mediocrity of Marvel.

So, we (but especially my husband) were a little hesitant going into the second movie. We all know that sequels are generally disappointing and we didn’t want to get our hopes up.

Well, this film is the exception to the “sequels suck” rule. I absolutely loved it, even more than the first.

Every element of what made the first film great seems to have been taken to the next, epic level. The animation was more diverse and astounding, the emotional arc was pitch perfect, and (of course) the soundtrack absolutely slapped (Is that what the kids say? Do the kids still say that? Help, I’m old).

The film feels like a rocket, blasting off from the very first moments and maintaining its pace til the very end, when you look over wide eyed at your husband who looks like a kid at Christmas. Or at least, that was my experience. I’m sure yours will be just as delightful, because I don’t think it’s possible to walk away from the film without at least a hint of a smile on your face.
