Barbie (2023)

As with Indiana Jones recently, I went into Barbie with zero expectations of what the film would be. And while I was pleasantly surprised at how much I thoroughly enjoyed it, I can see why others could leave disappointed.

For adults, Barbie proves to be manic, ridiculous, irreverent, self-aware, existential, and hilarious all at the same time. Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling shine, with Ryan Gosling delivering truly one of his best (if not most insane) performances to date. The movie never takes itself too seriously and yet somehow also touches on feelings of anxiety, dread, fear, and just how damn hard it is to be a woman.

However, the film is not as family friendly as I think many people were hoping. You definitely could bring your kids and not regret it, but most of the topics would likely go over children’s heads and actually end up making the film a little boring and somewhat inappropriate for little ones.

That being said, I think this movie is going to depend on the person watching it. Some will leave disappointed (fairly so) that the film was not more broad, while others will leave, as I did, more satisfied than Ken with his mojo dojo casa house.
